What we are learning...
Our Standards:
MGSE4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
MGSE4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
MGSE4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by one –digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular, arrays, and /or area models.
In class:
We have been discussing and practicing rounding numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, and millions.
We have been discussing and practicing two digit by two digit multiplication with the lattice model and the area model.
While learning about the two by two multiplication, students have been practicing their one by one digit multiplication skills by doing timed multiplication "show what you know."
Students have been retaught how to do equal groups, arrays, and repeated addition to find their multiplication facts that they have not mastered yet. All of these strategies have helped the students with the lattice and area model as well.
We continue to work on adding and subtracting with regrouping. Students use their knowledge of place value in order to add and subtract.
Students have learned or relearned how to add and subtract with touch math.
Students were taught the "hat and seat" trick for adding.
Students were taught the "more on the floor, go next door and borrow ten more" trick for subtracting
